Assessing the Adoption of Construction 4.0

Welcome!

The concept of ‘Construction 4.0’ was first introduced in 2015 to transfer the learnings from the fourth industrial revolution known as ‘Industry 4.0’ into the construction environment. Industry 4.0 is a set of advanced technologies that intersect to create an efficient cyber-physical environment, that includes such technologies as artificial intelligence; big data; Internet of things (IoT); sensor-based technologies; 3D printing; cloud computing; advanced software such as Building Information Modelling (BIM); and cybersecurity. The concept of Construction 4.0, and the transfer of technologies from Industry 4.0, has the potential to improve project performance, outcomes, and associated project management processes used by organizations within the built environment.

This survey is part of a master’s research project with Heriot-Watt University to assess the extent of adoption of Construction 4.0 technologies, tools, and processes within the US built environment and will provide feedback on the technologies adopted, challenges and benefits experienced, comparison to previous research, and recommendations for increasing adoption. If you are not in the US construction built environment but would still like to contribute to the research study, we have made provision for that in the survey questions and your feedback will help compare adoption between industry segments.

The information collected in this survey will only be used for the purposes of this research study and will be published. Where relevant, text entered in open text fields may be used to convey the opinions of participants, but all the survey data will be anonymous meaning that individual responses will not be tied to individual participants. Please feel free to share your feedback in the survey but also respect any confidentiality arrangements associated with your company and/or associated technologies. Note that this research is not affiliated with my employer.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey and contribute to construction industry research.
